I believe it was still happening. However, I lived in a catholic mother and baby home in 1981 as I was homeless and pregnant having been thrown out by my adoptive parents. The staff were very nice and never passed judgement and really helped me and my baby, who I kept by the way. But this is probably quite unusual.
I was also born in a mother and baby home in the 60s which was more like a penitentiary. Hard labour, no proper antenatal care, no pain relief in labour and religious indoctrination according to my birth mother and others who have shared their memories with me. Letters sent to the 'inmates' as they were called were intercepted by the matron and that horrible hard, shiny Izal toilet paper was used - very uncomfortable after having a baby!
I don`t have specific knowledge about women and childrens homes in sheffield 1983. I am looking for PGCE Behaviour Management Assignment so I came across this post.
